Landlord tales: be careful of crazy tenants
December 1, 2009
Be careful of loony toon tenants. One bad tenant in Sanford, Fla. became so upset when he was evicted that he broke back into his old house and stabbed his sleeping ex-landlord. His ex-landlord survived and the police provided the ex-tenant with new housing, the county jail.
The landlord apparently refunded the tenant’s $50 rent and moved the tenant’s belongings outside. The bad tenant is not through, apparently. When he gets out of jail he promises to come back and “finish the job.”
“It’s very annoying to me and it makes me very nervous,” a neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said.
This neighbor said the man started renting a room in the boarded-up home during the recent cold snap. But Thursday his landlord, Sylvia Sanders, decided the arrangement had to end.
“She wanted to have the gentleman vacated from the residence and offered to reimburse him the monies. And apparently a disagreement occurred,” said Capt. David Del Rosso, Sanford Police Department.
By 7:00pm Thursday, Jan. 21, Sanders says Britt’s belongings had been put outside, but he came back. Britt allegedly refused to hand over his key when he was evicted, so when he returned later in the night he was able to just unlock the front door and walk right in.
Sanders only awoke as Britt stabbed her leg. He ran from the home and left police with a threat when they caught him nearby.
About the Author: Bob Cain
Some 30 years ago Bob Cain went to a no-money-down seminar and got the notion that owning rental property would be just the best idea there is for making money. He bought some. Trouble was, what he learned at the seminar didn’t tell him how to make money on his rental property. He went looking for help in the form of a magazine or newsletter about the business. He couldn't find any.
Always ready to jump at a great idea, he decided he could put his speaking and writing skills to work and perform a valuable service for other investors who needed more information about property management. So Bob ferreted out the secrets, tricks and techniques of property management wherever he found them; then he passed them along to other landlords.
For over 25 years now, Bob has been publishing information, giving speeches, putting on seminars and workshops, and consulting for landlords on how to buy, rent and manage property more effectively.
